APIG VIC | APIG VIC: Construction Seminar & Networking Drinks | 19/11/2024 | 16:00 | 19/11/2024 | 20:00 | CBP Lawyers | Level 23, 181 William Street, MELBOURNE, VIC, 3000, AUSTRALIA, | Victoria in conjunction with the Australian Federal Government, local governments and the construction sector are aiming to build 1.2 million new homes over the next 5 years. At the same time,, the Victorian Minister for Planning has announced a new more powerful building and plumbing watchdog (the Building & Plumbing Commission) to oversee the industries across the State; the VBA has published an independently commissioned report into seven of the VBA’s most complex and challenging consumer cases; and Victoria’s builders’ warranty insurance will be reformed to provide greater “first resort” protection for consumers.
All of these developments come against the backdrop of the Victorian Building System Review commenced in 2021, following years of crumbling consumer confidence in the building and construction industry nationally, including several high-profile issues with Opal Towers, Lacrosse Apartments, and Mascot Towers.
In light of all these changes, what are the risks and challenges facing an already strained construction sector and what does it mean for industry participants, their insurers and advisors.

Management of Construction Risk - An Industry Insider's Perspective
Katherine Grace, Chief Legal and Chief Risk Officer and Andrew Palmer, General Manager - Group Risk Officer both of Stockland will provide an industry insider's perspective on the management of risk in major residential and construction projects in the context of the current legislative and economic environment.
Facilitated by James Baird, Partner at HWL Ebsworth Lawyers, this seminar will include commentary on:
- evaluation and selection of partners and contract structure;
- management of contractor insolvencies and cost escalations;
- key identified industry risks and likely future trends;
- risk diversification and/or transfer as part of the contract structure; and
- insurance procurement and the current and likely future role of insurance throughout the project lifecycle.
